Steve Marwick, our newest proctor, looks after our residents at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Almshouses.

Steve saw our social media posts earlier this year, when we were looking for new volunteer proctors, and contacted us directly. He has a long history of volunteering with organisations that have interested him.
Steve joined the Royal Air Force at 18 and enjoyed a career there for 10 years. A year after he left the RAF, he started volunteering and has never gone a year without volunteering since then. As well as volunteering with local schools and the National Autistic Society, Steve was a trustee at Greenham Control Tower for five years. After working hard there, he had a small break before looking for another volunteering role and finding Newbury Almshouse Trust. It’s important to Steve to give back to the community and do something worthwhile with his spare time.
The proctor role with Newbury Almshouse Trust is particularly significant to Steve, as through his connections with the RAF he has seen many veterans have to deal with homelessness and sofa surfing. He’s able to help people in Newbury that are in need of housing and cannot find homes through the usual channels, and also build a fantastic community at St Bart’s. Steve’s wife also volunteers for Fair Close, and delivers their meals on wheels, so their roles are both linked and very close to each other!
He also has a passion for history, and loves that he’s looking after such important, historic buildings.
In his day job, Steve works as Head of IT and Cybersecurity for an environmental research organisation. To contrast this technical, digital role, his hobbies are very analogue! He enjoys collecting vinyl records and fountain pens.
Steve is looking forward to getting to know the residents on his weekend visits and helping them with any issues.
