For more than 800 years, Newbury Almshouse Trust has provided secure and dignified housing for local people facing hardship. Our oldest almshouses trace their origins to 1215, when King John granted Newbury a charter linked to support St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Today, the Trust continues with that purpose: providing affordable, independent homes for vulnerable local people who need stability, safety and community.

For generations, Newbury Almshouse Trust has quietly cared for its homes and residents. But the cost of preserving historic almshouses has risen sharply.

Our buildings are beautiful, but they are also old, complex and expensive to maintain. Many are listed or historically sensitive, which means improvement works must be carefully planned and sympathetically carried out. Modern expectations around safety, energy efficiency, damp and mould management, electrical standards, fire safety and accessibility all require investment.

The Trust is determined to preserve Newbury’s almshouse heritage and to provide safe, warm, decent homes for local people in need. This cannot be achieved through resident contributions alone.
