Upper Raymond’s Almshouses

In 1826 the Raymond’s Almshouse Charity built this terrace of 10 houses on the North side of Derby Road with long front gardens to enable the occupants to grow some of their own food. This was an expansion of the facilities offered by this charity as the existing houses in Newton Road (Lower Raymonds) continued to be used. At one point the trustees were critisised by the Charity Commissioners  for using their funds in this way. However, the poor of Newbury would not be complaining.

In more recent times a large portion of the gardens has been used as the site for the building of  the St Mary Hill Almshouses and to provide car parking facilities for residents.
