Hunt’s Almshouses

Hunt’s Almshouses were established by the will of Thomas Hunt in 1727 to provide succour to three women. Hunt had left a house in West Mills and money to buy an adjacent tenement along with considerable land in Greenham which was subsequently sold with proceeds being used to establish an educational foundation offering support to those in secondary and tertiary education. The original houses were demolished and three new houses were built on the site in 1817. The original buildings were converted into a single dwelling in 1955 and the three new almshouses currently owned by the Trust were built in 1956 in nearby in St David’s Road.
